‘Now that I know y’all can see this, I will not stop going’: Gym worker shares that employees know how long it’s been since customer last went to gym

‘Why y’all even trackin this.’

I found this interesting article about a gym worker at the front desk who did not understand why members had memberships and only used them once or twice a year. The gym worker reported that when a member checks in, the computer shows their last visitation date, and when their attendance is mentioned, some members tend to get upset. Some of the gym members reported that they did not like the fact that gyms are tracking their attendance. One gym member stated, “She did not like that they were tracking her, and now that the little motivation she had to go to the gym is gone.”

I worked for 25 years as a Trainer/Wellness Coach with the YMCA, and I can tell you firsthand that I had this same question. Why do some people get gym memberships and never really use their memberships? Some gym memberships have lovely amenities like pools, steam rooms, aerobic classes, and much more! But yet, some gym members never take advantage of the opportunities in their gyms. I used to feel so bad that people were giving their money to us and never took advantage of the opportunities that their gyms provided.

This article just revealed the need for gyms to take advantage of the opportunity to show that they are there for their members and care for their health by doing outreach to nonactive gym members through calling, emailing, and texting them. Providing them with a free consultation that would give them a detailed workout to follow. I have found from working in the gym that many times, a lot of people really don’t know how to use most of the equipment in the gym correctly and don’t just know what to do. Gyms can assist members by helping them get back on track; Gyms can also help individuals build self-confidence with workouts, see results and have better health. Gyms can see benefits with seeing better retention rates which in turn can improve profits.
