A New Year is the opportunity to set new goals, change & improve habits by setting resolutions. Losing weight is Americans’ most common New Year resolution; sadly, most people do not complete them.
Some tips for sticking with your fitness New Years resolution starts with small goals and a plan that includes when, where and how you plan to exercise.
WHEN: The New Year is an excellent time to start an exercise routine, with some studies showing that more than half of Americans set patterns but only a tiny fraction of people accomplish their goals. As a trainer who has worked years in the gym. I’ve found that January is a dream for most gyms because enrollment usually increases, but this can also become a nightmare for the wellness staff employees in which they become overloaded with people wanting to join only by March for the majority of them to stop coming. Most gyms begin to experience this membership explosion at the beginning of the year and then dwindle to their regular gym goers by March.
When it comes to when you should exercise all depends on your schedule and you. Are you a morning person? Then working out early mornings would possibly work best for you. If you are not a morning person, try to incorporate exercise throughout the day by doing some activities, like walking on your breaks and working out as soon as you are done with work. Start with exercising at least 2-3 days a week for at least 30 minutes to an one hour for the first month and gradually increase your days and over time. Working in the fitness field, I hear from many people who don’t exercise regularly that they don’t have time to exercise. To improve your health and body, you must make time BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY. There are too many health benefits from exercising regularly and there are also many health that can also occur from not exercising
WHERE: Do you plan to work out at home or at a gym? If you plan to work out at home, be sure you have or get a few essential fitness equipment, such as dumbbells, resistance bands, a mat, and a Yoga ball. If you are new to exercising or it’s been a while, search social media for fitness videos and follow them until you are comfortable doing it on your own. Be sure to find exercise videos that are on your level. So, if you are a beginner, don’t try extreme exercises such as HITT, Kick Boxing, and running to help avoid injuries. It’s best to start with easy exercise routines and slowly work your way up to challenging ones that will be much easier on your body and mind.
If you plan to work out at the gym, consider joining a gym that includes Aerobic classes with your membership. Aerobic classes can allow you to get professional guidance on exercise routines, meet cool people, try new classes and helps to hold you accountable. It’s best to incorporate a variety of Aerobic classes in your fitness routine, such as Yoga, Pilates, Zumba, Water Aerobics, and many other fun classes that they may have available. Also, with your gym membership, take advantage of the free Health and Wellness consultations that most gyms offer, in which one to two complimentary sessions are given on how to use the gym equipment properly.
HOW: What to do when it comes to exercising for beginners or those who have been out of the game for a while can be confusing for some. Again, I suggest starting with social media like You Tube Videos if you are working out at home and if you are working out in a gym, consider investing in a couple of sessions with a Personal Trainer. Having a Personal Trainer will start you off in a good direction which can help prevent injuries, and most importantly, you can achieve and see results.
Lastly, by not exercisng on a regular bases can lead to obesity which is contributed to being one of the leading causes of chronic illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, and even death in America. Exercising isn’t an OPTION anymore if you want better health and to live longer.
