Scales measuring body fat have been shown to help increase the frequency of self-weighing and boost weight loss. Digital scales measure body fat loss somewhat like regular scales, except they use innovative tech to calculate weight and body composition, such as fat, visceral fat, bone density, body water, muscle percentages, heart rate, BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate in Kcal), and BMI. This is done using a bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), a weak electric current that sends a painless charge through the feet to estimate a range of body metrics. The smart scale then sends the data to your phone, where the information is stored and updated every time you step on the scale.
Nutritional habits can also be improved by the scales tracking the body’s makeup of how much fat and muscle is in the body, giving an overall view of one’s health and fitness. Smart scales can be beneficial because they are budget-friendly for measuring body composition.
The downside of using smart scales is that they are not always accurate for body composition, and research has suggested that these scales should not replace medical or laboratory tests.
Overall, the benefits outweigh the negatives of having a smart scale. At least you will have a close estimation of your body composition, which can help you make healthy decisions according to your weight. For example, say a person may be on a weight loss journey and has recently started incorporating weight training into their workouts and then have noticed that their weight has stalled, or they may have even gained 2-5 pounds! Their smart scale can let them know if they have gained muscle weight which can cause you to gain a few pounds in the first couple of weeks; their smart scale can also let them know how much body fat they have lost.
Benefits of Digital Scales:
- They usually are made with quality, impact-resistant tempered glass that is four times stronger than standard glass
- Some scales come with smart apps that can give you extensive health data
- Some have biometrics, such as heart rate tracking, track over 12 body composition metrics, and are easy to use
- Smart body fat scales usually attach to your smartwatch fitness apps, and they are usually Bluetooth or/and have WIFI connections that you can use with your phone to open the app
- Several users in your home can use it; the body fat scale automatically recognizes and stores readings for several users so you and your family can stay healthy together
- Can be purchased at Amazon, Walmart, or Best Buy
Tips when weighing yourself:
–Try to weigh yourself the same way every time. So, if you usually weigh yourself with clothes off, in your underwear (which I recommend) or with your clothes on, then do it that way every time
–For smart scales, weigh yourself barefoot so that the sensors on the scale can read your metrics
–When you weigh yourself, stay on the smart scale for at least 30 seconds to thoroughly read your metrics and send it to your app on your phone & computer
–Empty your bladder before you weigh yourself
