A Spotlight on Cancer Survivors

For cancer survivors, the journey doesn’t end with remission. Staying physically active and eating healthier are pivotal in preventing recurrence. Studies show that regular physical activity and a nutritious diet can significantly reduce the chances of cancer returning. While specific recurrence rates vary by cancer type, the overall message is clear: a proactive approach to health can make a real difference in keeping cancer at bay.

We encourage our community, especially cancer survivors, to explore resources to support their continued journey toward health. The Livestrong Foundation offers the Livestrong program, tailored specifically for cancer survivors, providing tools, information, and community support to navigate the path of recovery and prevention. Even if you are not a survivor, there is plenty of fantastic health and wellness information for everyone!!

Is Cancer Preventable?

The good news is that many cancers can be prevented. According to research, one-third of cancer cases could be averted by quitting smoking, lowering alcohol use, keeping a healthy weight, eating a nutritious diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and avoiding excessive sun exposure.

The Obesity and Cancer Connection

The link between being overweight and getting cancer is a complicated and vital health issue that has gotten a lot of attention from doctors. Studies have shown that being overweight or obese raises the chance of getting many kinds of cancer, such as breast, colon, endometrial, pancreatic, and more.

This link might be because of several things connected to obesity, including higher amounts of insulin and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), long-term inflammation, and imbalances in sex hormones, all of which can help cancer cells grow and develop.

Also, people who are overweight or obese make too much estrogen, a hormone that is linked to an increased chance of breast and endometrial cancers. Keeping a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise is therefore very important for lowering the chance of cancer and improving health and well-being in general.

How Can You Help Prevent Cancer and Support Research?

  • Adopt a Healthy Lifestyle: Eat a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Regular exercise helps to maintain a healthy weight and reduces the risk of cancer.

Increase Physical Activity: Get at least 150 minutes a week of physical activity.

  • Limit Risk Factors. Avoid tobacco use, restrict alcohol use, and protect your skin from the sun.
  • Get Screened. Regular screenings can help discover certain types of cancer early when treatment is most effective.

“Prevention is better than cure.” Together, we can minimize cancer risk and live healthier, happier lives.” Let this quote motivate you to make concrete efforts toward cancer prevention. Every effort counts, from adopting better lifestyle habits to funding cancer research and preventive programs.
