According to the CDC, approximately 98 million adults in the United States have prediabetes, and more than 8 out of 10 don’t even know it.

That means millions of people are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes without realizing it.
But the risk doesn’t usually start with a diagnosis.
It often begins with:
- Gradual weight gain
- High blood pressure
- Elevated cholesterol
- Low energy or inconsistent physical activity
These are early warning signs that are often overlooked.
You May Be at Risk If…
You may be at increased risk for type 2 diabetes if you:
- Have gained weight over time
- Have been told your blood pressure or cholesterol is high
- Are not physically active on a regular basis
- Have a family history of diabetes
- Feel like your health habits have become inconsistent
Many people think, “I don’t have diabetes, so I’m fine.”
How These Conditions Are Connected
Weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol are all connected.
When one area is off, it often affects the others.
Over time, this can increase the risk of:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Heart disease
- Stroke
The encouraging news is that type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed with the right lifestyle changes.
But in reality, these risk factors often develop quietly over time.
A Structured Approach That Works
The National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) is an evidence-based program developed to help individuals take control of their health before diabetes develops.
This program focuses on:
- Sustainable weight loss
- Healthy eating habits
- Increasing physical activity
- Ongoing support and accountability
Participants who complete the program have been shown to reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 58%.
What I See in My Work
As a Lifestyle Coach and NDPP Provider, I work with individuals who often come in feeling unsure about where to start.
Over time, I’ve seen participants:
- Lose weight in a healthy, sustainable way
- Improve their blood sugar and overall health
- Build confidence in their daily habits
The goal is not perfection. The goal is consistency, support, and progress.
This Is Not Just About You
If you are reading this and thinking, “This might apply to me,” it’s worth paying attention.
But also consider this:
You may have a family member, friend, or loved one who is:
- Struggling with weight
- Managing high blood pressure or cholesterol
- At risk for diabetes but doesn’t realize it
