One of the first multi-studies on Type 2 diabetes rates among youth in the United States found an increase among young people ages 8 to 21 years of age. From March 2018 through February 2021, the study looked at 24 U.S. hospitals with an increase in Type 2 diabetes diagnosis and a (BMI) in the 85th percentile range in which they would be considered overweight or obese.
The study found a rise of new Type 2 diabetes by more than 72% among youth compared to the previous two years. The Youth with the new Type 2 diabetes diagnosis also had an increase in hemoglobin A1C levels and Blood Glucose levels. Researchers suggest that clinicians should be diligent in screening children who are at risk for Type 2 diabetes due to weight gain.
Experts acknowledge that Type 2 diabetes among children used to be rare, and the numbers have almost doubled over the past 20 years. The increase in obesity and Type 2 diabetes among youth is believed to be caused by less activity and more screen time.
