- Skip the elevator & escalators and take the stairs! If you are able to take the stairs then do so! Great way to help with toning legs and build stamina.
- Take more than one walk a day. Studies have shown that taking a light walk after dinner can help the body to decrease insulin levels. Double your calorie-burning power by taking a 10 – 30 min. walk during the day, or on your lunch or break. Do another walk again after dinner.
- Add light hand weights to your walks. Adding a little weight to your workout can make it more challenging helping you to work a little harder, and tone your lower as well as your upper body.
- Take your dog (Best Friend) with you on your walks. If you have a dog, bring them on your walk with you for extra fun! This can add a little getaway and exploration for your Bestie! Your dog may even motivate you to walk a little further!
- Alternate your speed! Alternating your speed in your walk between a steady pace and a power walking walk speed will elevate your heart rate and burn more calories!!
Start with walking the first 5 minutes nice and easy, After the 1st 5 minutes, pick up the speed and walk a little faster. Try to maintain this pace for the next 5 minutes then slow down your walking for about 30 seconds to 1 minute then pick up your speed again for another 5 minutes. You can continue this pattern until you have completed the number of minutes you want to do. This walking routine works best with at least a minimum 10-minute walk. Remember to end your walk with a 1-minute cool-down walk to allow your heart rate to return to normal.
